What's the Scoop on Poker Books?

Poker is one of "the" hot games at the moment.  There are increasing numbers online poker rooms and casinos being opened and a multitude of new players coming into the game.  Poker books don't have to be read in order to play the game, they don't even need to be read in order to win a few hands - but if you have a dream of one day clipping one of those fancy WPT bracelets on your wrist, then you better dust off your library and card and start reading, because amongst the chapters in the poker books by the real pros of the game you'll find everything you need to know to get the strategy you need to win that major title you covet!

There are poker books which are designed to teach you the basics of poker.  To show you which hands win and which hands out-win other hands.  If you play poker online then you probably don't need this low introductory level of poker book.  It's aimed mainly at those who've never heard of a suited connector!

On the other hand there are some really famous poker books out there written by some of the poker legends - poker players who are still on the circuit today and who you might find yourself on the other side of the felt from if you follow the words in their book!  These books may cover some of the elementary rules of the game just for anyone who hasn't quite got the hang of it, but mainly they're for the player who wants to up their standing in the poker world and start to take on more of a leading role.  These books deal with strategy, they tell you which cards to play and which to fold, they advise you on when to go "all in" and when to lay down.  They let you in on secrets of pot averages, and card counting.

The more interesting of the poker books give insight into the players themselves.  What makes for a good poker player?  What is the life of a poker player really like?  How did today's celebrity poker players (and authors) get started?  These stories are what puts the poker player into human form and shows you how mortal - and beatable - they are!

Poker books are a great gift both for those who enjoy the odd shuffle up and deal amongst friends on a Saturday night, and also those who are serious about increasing their game skill to be in with a chance at a World Series of Poker Tour final table.
